As we were exiting the reserve one morning, we saw two elephants on the side of the road by the gates. Shalik said that they were not wild. These were probably used at one time to carry tourists into the reserve to search for tigers. The Indian government studied this practise and decided it didn't give the tigers a fighting chance at any privacy. Elephants can go where ever tigers can so when the females were caring for their young cubs they were disturbed and it was having an impact on the family. Jeeps have to stick to the roads so the tigers could hide when need be.
In my perfect world, I was riding an elephant and communing with the tigers but really, my experience was amazing without the elephants. I am more content knowing that the tigers have a better chance to thrive.

I am glad to see that after retiring from duty these elephants had each other to live out their days.
